Message from our Chief

Hello, my name is Gary Schiessl, and I am the newly elected Chief of the Somers Fire Department.  It is a great honor for me to lead the approximately 70 volunteer members of the Fire Department, Ambulance and Auxiliary, as well as the 10 full-time and part-time Career staff.  These men and women are dedicated to supporting the citizens of the Town of Somers whenever you need our assistance.

Since the day I entered the fire service almost 32 years ago, there has been a constant theme of “change”.  It is critical that all areas of the Somers Fire Department keep pace with the latest equipment and training methodologies.  With an increased focus on fire prevention, the department encounters far fewer structure fires then 20 years ago, while improvements in car safety allow drivers to often walk away from crashes that used to cause serious injuries.  Since our hands-on situations have been reduced, it is necessary for department members to spend considerable time attending training to stay current on the latest risks and how to address them.

I’d like to thank the residents of Somers for your continued support of the Fire Department.  We are always looking for new members from the community to join the fire department or ambulance divisions.  If interested, you can access the department application from the front page of this website, fill it out and then drop it off at the firehouse.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns at chief46@somersfire.org, or you can call the firehouse at (860)749-7626.

I look forward to serving the Somers community.

Gary G. Schiessl

Chief, Somers Fire Department
