MISSION STATEMENT

"It is the mission of the Fire Marshal's Office to prevent and/or reduce the incidence of fire by increasing the awareness and knowledge of the residents and businesses respecting fire safety, and by ensuring compliance with the Connecticut Fire Safety Code and applicable regulations of the State of Connecticut. This mission will be accomplished through fire prevention education, fire investigations and compliance inspections. We will actively participate with our community, serve as role models, and strive to effectively and efficiently utilize all resources made available, to provide safety and excellent customer service to the citizens of the town of Somers, Connecticut, as well as those who are it's visitors."

        The Fire Marshal’s Office responsible for the enforcement of many of the sections found in Chapter 541 of the Connecticut General Statutes, as well as numerous codes that are promulgated under the provision of these statutes. One of these requirements is inspecting existing buildings and facilities of public service and occupancies regulated by the Connecticut State Fire Safety Code.   Some of these occupancies that can be found in Somers include, but are not limited to:  Bars, Bed and Breakfasts, Businesses’, Churches, Day Cares, Dentists’& Doctors’ Offices, Gas Stations, Group Homes, Libraries, Pre Schools, Restaurants, and Schools.  When conducting these inspections we are looking for life safety hazards in order to protect the public and the employees of said establishments. 

        We conduct inspections of the schools when events such as concerts, dances and plays are being conducted.  We also conduct inspections at the four town fair grounds when fairs take place.  In conjunction with the State Fire Marshal’s Office we inspect all rides for function and wear.  The Building Official and Fire Marshal will inspect vendor’s proper use of electrical equipment and proper use, setup and securing of cooking equipment.  In addition they inspect all tents for proper compliance with flame testing and making sure they are properly secured.
