Fire Prevention Poster Contest The annual Connecticut Fire Prevention Poster Contest is held each year. The goal of the contest is to make school children and their families aware that preventing fires requires everyone being alert everyday to those acts, omissions and dangers which cause fire. Public, private and parochial school students in the fourth and fifth grade are eligible to participate in the contest. Last year 130 communities and approximately 30,000 students participated. The contest opens in early October and concludes in December. All posters must be the student’s original work and are judged on spelling, neatness and how well they have conveyed their fire safety messages. All posters are judged on the local level and an overall winner for each grade level is chosen. Those two winning posters are sent on to compete on the county level. If they win on the county level, the winners receive a $250.00 savings bond and they are eligible to be chosen as the overall state winner. The state winner receives a $1000.00 savings bond. The county winners will also have their posters published in a calendar and the posters will be displayed at the state capitol during the month of October. On the local level awards are presented to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each grade. In addition the first place winners receive a ride home from school in a fire truck. All the winning posters will be on display at their respective schools, library, fire house and town hall. We would like to thank all the students who participated, you made our job of judging the posters a difficult one. We also want to congratulate all winners and their families for a job well done. We would also like to extend our sincere appreciation to the art teachers who help the students with ideas and setting the project up. Without them our program would not be as successful as it is.
